To me the aesthetics are worth it. With my hammers and screwdrivers, I don't care. I sand the facial area of my hammer heads after they need it, hold the blades of my screwdrivers sq. clean and accurate, but I don't do the maintenance for wood handled screwdrivers or blued steel hammer shafts.
